In order to play Before Your Eyes, the player needs to sit in front of a webcam and stay still. The biggest issue with Before Your Eyes is the control scheme. The best aspect of Before Your Eyes is also linked to its worst. The graphics fit the tone of the world perfectly, with the other characters resembling the NPCs from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Wakerin terms of their design. This is helped by some amazing vocal performances, with the actors who portray Benajmin's parents bringing a level of humanity to their characters that makes them feel like the stars of the show. If you love "What remains of Edith Finch" this game is definitely for you.The story of Before Your Eyes is phenomenal, managing to switch from joyful to heartbreaking in a moment as the truth about Benjamin's life is revealed. I especially recommend the game if you're already interested in walking simulators, and if you want to see how videogames can start incorporating the mechanics into the story in a way you might not have experienced before!
BEFORE YOUR EYES INDIE GAME FULL
I would even recommend it to people who've never gamed before, it's super intuitive! The game is around 80-120 minutes, but it only costs 10 dollars/euro at full price, so totally worth it in my opinion. If it sounds mildly interesting, and you own a webcam I HIGHLY recommend this game. Very emotional story, fantastic overall, one of my new favorite games ever, probably my GOTY so far.

Maybe the blinking mechanic doesn't sounds like it would make the experience that special, but it really immerses you into the story in a unique way. Where you can't get the full experience just by watching, which is what I believe where games are going to start moving in general. But it's very rare that they fully utilize gameplay into the story, that they tell the story that is only possible because of the videogame medium.(Example of this is that one microwave scene in metal gear solid 4, full disclaimer I haven't played it myself, but have heard people talk about it)īut this game and to a bit lesser extent "What Remains of Edith Finch" are creating full videogames around the unique storytelling-possibilities of games, to a point where I feel the medium is starting to come into its own, where story and gameplay are intertwined to the point that they're inseparable. Developers have learnt what works in cinema, and incorporated those lessons in cutscenes. I consider most games to still be in that "filmed theater" phase of incorporating the story into the gameplay, where sure the gameplay is fun, but if you don't care about that you can probably get 95% enjoyment of just the story just by watching it on youtube. These things evolved cinema to something unique. Then overtime the medium evolved to use things unique to cinema, cutting back and forth, more dynamic camera movement, forced perspectives, angles, putting things in focus, special effects etc. Early cinema was sort of felt like "filmed theater", with a static camera and actors standing in the same location.

This is one of those very few games that are fully enhanced by specifically being a videogame. It forces you to stay in the moment, and makes every moment feel fleeting, in a very good way. Because you want to continue watching the memory, whilst at the same time fighting your natural instincts to blink the storytelling works in a way I've never really experienced before. Every time you do so you move on to the next memory, whether that's a few moments, or a few years. The game uses the unique mechanic of having your webcam to look at your face, and checking when you blink. Before your Eyes is a short 2 hour long walking-simulator where you go through a now dead-person's life by experiencing it through his memories.
